SAN DIEGO (KSWB/KUSI) — The driest place in North America had a lake big enough to kayak in this past winter, and NASA has released data on how big the rare lake actually got.

Late last year, a rare lake, dubbed Lake Manly, began forming in the Badwater Basin area of California’s Death Valley.

“You might think with no drain to the sea that Death Valley would always have a lake,” park ranger Abby Wines said in a February press release from the National Park Service. “But this is an extremely rare event. Normally, the amount of water flowing in is much less than the evaporation rate.”

UAE government unit denies cloud seeding took place before Dubai floods

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The National Center of Meteorology, a government taskforce responsible for cloud seeding missions in the United Arab Emirates, denied reports that it carried out the weather modification technique in the run-up to heavy storms across the country, therefore exacerbating flooding in places like Dubai.

The organization told CNBC that it did not dispatch pilots for seeding operations before or during the storm that struck the UAE on Tuesday.

Omar AlYazeedi, deputy director general of the NCM, said the agency “did not conduct any seeding operations during this event.”

He added, “One of the basic principles of cloud seeding is that you have to target clouds in its early stage before it rains, if you have a severe thunderstorm situation then it is too late to conduct any seeding operation.”

On Tuesday, the country experienced its heaviest downpour to date, with more than 250 millimeters (10 inches) of rainfall in the Emirate of Al Ain, according to NCM figures, and recording more than 100 mm in places like Dubai. The annual rainfall in the UAE averages between 140 to 200 mm.

Deep in Death Valley, a Sprawling Lake Takes Form

Repeated bouts of heavy rain have filled Badwater Basin in Death Valley, the driest spot in North America.

The lake first formed in August after Hurricane Hilary pounded the California desert, and while water levels dropped through the fall, an early February downpour filled the lake once again. Satellite imagery from NASA captured the basin before the hurricane and after, and again following the recent rainstorm.

It's actually two new lakes. Manly lake and Badwater basin.

“Most of us thought the lake would be gone by October,” said Abby Wine, a ranger in Death Valley National Park. “We were shocked to see it still here after almost six months. This week’s rain will extend how long the lake is here.”

Storm 36 and after

Over 500 landslides in Beverly Hills, Studio City, Bel Air, Santa Barbara Isla Vista the playa, and so on. Guess who lives in these mega rich cities? Happily, our snowpack in the Sierras is loaded up for the spring melt that from this alone, will keep rivers full for another year.

“Our hillsides are already saturated. So even not-very-heavy rains could still lead to additional mudslides,” Mayor Karen Bass said during an evening news conference, per AP. “Even when the rain stops, the ground may continue to shift.”
