how big Death Valley’s ‘rare’ lake got this winter

SAN DIEGO (KSWB/KUSI) — The driest place in North America had a lake big enough to kayak in this past winter, and NASA has released data on how big the rare lake actually got.

Late last year, a rare lake, dubbed Lake Manly, began forming in the Badwater Basin area of California’s Death Valley.

“You might think with no drain to the sea that Death Valley would always have a lake,” park ranger Abby Wines said in a February press release from the National Park Service. “But this is an extremely rare event. Normally, the amount of water flowing in is much less than the evaporation rate.”

The entire valley floor is a shifting moving lake with huge raging rivers feeding into it and much of it draining into the massive rocky sinkhole that appeared taking it underground.

A very good day last Sunday, I must say. 

We got six inches of rain where I live that day. Everything is already turning green again. How nice.

 

Water a Great Blessing

Rains over Owens and Death Valley, almost every day now.

I spent more than six hours going up and down roads, visiting small hamlets, the great fields, all that. Everyone looks to be staying. Eventually, the tenant renters will have to move to a better locale. Buttsmell corp believes waters or no waters, the land and therefore the emergent lake, belongs to them. At least that portion is tard corp acreage. Interesting.

The purple smudges above are rainfall in the Mojave desert out of nothing. This is how it starts, as when putting out arson, it just appears as a small cloud of nothing but the rain is falling. It grows by the hour into whatever it either needs or is growing to be.

Little Lake, CA.

Little lake is actually about 7 miles long and its completely full. I've never seen the like, before this year. Amazing thing to see.

Owens Valley and Death Valley in distance. Green as can be, even though 4 months ago, it was sand dunes and nothing.
