This does not even take into account, the trials and tribulations of our own life path – whatever that may be for each of us – that in normal times, is quite hard enough. It's dark; many are still asleep. Great flocks of birds leave their perches – have been all week. Great swarms circling over the bay, then heading inland. Cats and dogs go missing...those last few days, MISSING posters go up by the thousands everywhere to the point it becomes coffee talk. Pets stop eating that cannot escape. Start hiding in cabinets – won't come out. The horses stampede in the paddocks, going nowhere. As far as San Jose even.
Then that first jolt – low, deep, rumbling. For a full minute time stops. The very air itself is abandoned by those that move their selves as the living air we breath – not a breath of wind, or anything. Total silence. No dogs, no cars, as if a great silencer fell over the land and water, miles out to sea. Then, in the silence, ship bells on ships that still have such things, ring in the distance. That's it. It begins.
I saw it from above, about 2 miles up and a mile out to sea, south of the peninsula that is San Francisco. I can still see it. It starts around what I believe is the Embardocaro road and the Market street area, where the Golden Gate comes into from Marin. To understand this, imagine you are holding in your hand a fistful of dominoes. Standing upright and right next to each other, like a stack. No spaces or side by side. Place that upright stack on a table. Now imagine the front domino just silently slips down into the table and disappears, leaving no trace it was ever there at all. After that, the others follow, but instead of a single piece, they fall like melting sugar, each domino collapsing in its own unique way, but always straight down, slipping beneath the sea. Each fall creates this series of waves that instantly spreads out into the various bays that make up the entire area. Alameda literally vanishes beneath the waters, only to emerge wiped clean. Much of the flat inland areas get the same wave after wave and colliding wave removing everything. By noon, all these bays are filled with millions of corpses with some survivors in there. Every shark for 100 miles heads to the smell of that much blood.
No one talks. No one can comprehend what just happened. Where are the bridges? Where is the city? Why does Vallejo and Berkeley look like fukushima? What has happened?
If you live in San Jose or south of that, you'll be fine.
